At Becontree, we want every child to become a confident, fluent and enthusiastic reader. Reading is at the heart of our curriculum: children learn the skills they need to read successfully, encounter a wide range of high-quality texts and are encouraged to develop their own reading interests. We want our children not only to learn to read, but to discover the enjoyment, knowledge and opportunities that reading can bring.
Our Reading Strategy explains how we teach and develop reading across the school, from the early stages of learning to read through to developing fluent, confident and thoughtful readers.
Reading at home can make a huge difference to children's confidence, fluency and enjoyment of reading. Below you'll find practical advice, resources and recommendations to help support your child's reading at home, whether they need help becoming fluent, finding books they enjoy or discovering different ways to access stories.
Every child develops as a reader at their own pace. At Becontree, we use a range of approaches to help children build the skills, confidence and enjoyment they need to make progress in reading.
Some children benefit from additional support alongside their usual reading lessons. Explore the pages below to find out more about the programmes and approaches we use in school.
